Amy Goodman Raises Her Independent Voice at Book Fest

By Nicole Brydson

The description for the Independent Media Voices panel at the Brooklyn Book Festival was slightly more in depth than the subsequent discussion between Amy Goodman (host, Democracy Now!), Pamela Newkirk (author of Letters From Black America), and Richard Nash (publisher, Soft Skull Press), moderated by Dennis Loy Johnson (publisher, Melville House Press). Though the speakers were a little bit disjointed after a last minute change that replaced zine guru Jessica Hopper with Mr. Nash, Ms. Goodman stayed on her point that the corporate media is in bed with war profiteers. The Urban Individualists Render the Heart of Brooklyn

By Lauren Raheja

At a new exhibit at the Williamsburg Music Center, The Urban Individualists, an art collective, wear their hearts on their sleeve. The show, entitled Hard Hearts, examines the diverse way in which the theme was interpreted in 28 different works. “Everything stems from a root – the tree stems from a root, the plant stems from a root – you have to get to the root of the person in order to get to the heart,” said Mia Roman Hernandez, a Brooklyn-born collective member. Featuring guitar players, bassists, painters, poets, mixed media artists, photographers, saxophone players, sculptors, and vocalists, the Urban Individualists are an eclectic and entertaining bunch.

Bloomberg-subscribed tweeters, including Brooklyn The Borough were pointed by the campaign via twitter, to read about the mayor’s, and Borough President Marty Markowitz’s, efforts to revitalize the Brooklyn waterfront. What readers didn’t know is that the Cobble Hill Blog merely re-posted, word for word, a press release sent out by the borough president’s office.

Summer Saturdays: Brighton Beach

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Nowhere in Brooklyn is there a more foreign enclave than Brighton. Under the elevated tracks of the B and Q, caressed by sea breezes, the sidewalks of Brighton Beach Avenue vibrate with a cacophony of voices: the Russian of women hawking pastries, the English of sand-seeking day trippers, the hum of shoppers hailing from Omsk to Kiev.
