Thank you, Nicole. Your description of Brooklyn & Vito Lopez are so true:
Our borough, our city and our state are full of do nothing, say nothing, cretin of the earth politicians who mismanage state coffers, hire friends and family, manufacture red tape, and get into bed with interests that are not the taxpayers own, because we treat these arbiters of our supposed democracy as part-time employees.

Finally, on Jan. 4, 2012, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled that one of Lopez’s signature projects, the Broadway Triangle housing development in Brooklyn, was illegally designed to house Williamsburg’s Hasidic population at the expense of their Latino and black neighbors.

At the same time, his longtime Campaign Manager and ally Christiana Fisher was booted as CEO of the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council that Lopez founded, after the city found she falsified documents to justify her $780,000 salary. Go, ahead and look online at their tax documents and see how much more Christiana Fisher was paid than other employees--and how hugely her salary jumped every year. This criminal should have to pay back her ill-gotten salary. Unlike other professionals at RBSCC, Christiana was hugely unpopular with seniors and other staffers, as 99% of RBSCC grants came from Lopez/govt hookups, leaving Christiana and Lopez with dictatorial control over the vulnerable seniors.

[...] 1. Le Poisson Rouge – a lounge/bar/restaurant on Bleecker Street that I first went to this year. I loved this venue. Great sound, fine cocktails (The Garfunkel & Lavender Lemonade http://lepoissonrouge.com/pdfs/menu.pdf ), and excellent artists. I saw Doveman aka Thomas Bartlett play twice, with such guests as Beth Orton, Glen Hansard, St. Vincent, Nico Muhly, Lisa Hannigan, and Sam Amidon. On another night, I got to see Jon Brion do a rare appearance in New York. As well as being a musical genius he is also the producer of albums by Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and even Kanye West. I look forward to seeing many more shows at this fine establishment. http://www.brooklyntheborough.com/2011/04/how-thomas-bartlett-doveman-keeps-busy/ [...]

While cops should be well trained, and well screened, I feel no balance in the story. Yes, there are bad cops and they can be jerks...or worse... However the fact remains that the average law abiding person will in almost every context...be the recipient of either positive service, or at times, heroic action. There are horrible exceptions, yet even in the era where most of those cited occurred, crime was reduced drastically, a city teetering on bankruptcy and ruin was brought back, and tens of thousands of largely minority citizens are alive today due to some very aggressive policing by the NYPD. You were 6 in 1987, you could not possibly know how bad it had gotten by then, or how much safer and better the city was in 1997. You can not imagine it in 1981 the year of your birth, when Movies such as FT Apache The Bronx and Escape from NY were national releases. Nor can you speak knowledgeably of the better days of New York, and the decades of post war decay culminating in the early 80's. The city was at a fork in the road. A place for law abiding residents and visitors to enjoy, or a continued slide into the 3rd world criminal's paradise it was resembling. You are fortunate apparently, for never needing the services of a policeman when your life has been threatened. How nice. Welcome to a better NY, made that way in large part to some very aggressive policing.

Something that confuses me frequently, is that much of the internet says Hell's Kitchen is on the west side of Manhattan, by Lincoln Square; however in movies, video games, and this blog, it's said to be in Brooklyn. Are there two Hell's Kitchens, or are a lot of people confused?
