Author Jhumpa Lahiriwas was honored with a Bobi Award today at the 6th Annual Brooklyn Book Festival, for a body of work that exemplifies or speaks to the spirit of Brooklyn and has had a broad impact on the field of literature.
Author Rick Moody appeared at the Franklin Park Reading series in November and read from his latest novel The Four Fingers of Death.
Every second Monday the Franklin Park Reading Series features another rising star and new talent, and October was no exception. The following clips – it’s a long story, there are two – feature Jennifer Egan reading from her latest novel A Visit from the Goon Squad.
Shelly Oria is our guest contributor this month. She was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Israel. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Shelly’s fiction has appeared in McSweeney’s, Quarterly West, cream city review, and fivechapters among other places. She curates the series Sweet! Actors Reading Writers in the East Village, teaches fiction at the Gotham Writers’ Workshop, and is the co-producer of Literary Death Match Tel Aviv. Shelly was awarded the 2008 Indiana Review Fiction Prize for her story “New York 1, Tel Aviv 0,” and is currently completing her first story collection, which carries the same title. This year’s 5th annual Book Festival at Borough Hall was a hit once again, despite the rainy weather, and we were fortunate enough to catch a lot of great authors. Watch our video for a taste of the fest.
That New Year’s Day of the Brooklyn literary scene, the Brooklyn Book Festival, is fast approaching. On September 12, myriad writers, readers, and other assorted bookfolk will descend once again on Brooklyn’s Borough Hall.
