The Daptone Family Funks Up Prospect Park
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are bringing a full 'Super Soul Revue' to Celebrate Brooklyn this Saturday. Expect special guests from the Daptone extended family like soul dynamo Lee Fields and afro-metal crew the Budos Band, both already confirmed.
Why you should care: SJDK have been touring the world on the success of their 4th album, "I Learned The Hard Way" but getting to this point has been a long and slow battle. The musicians at Daptone have been making music together for over ten years, building their own studio out of scraps, tubes and analog tape machines and managing the workings of the label independently in the heart of Bushwick. Along the way, various parts of the band have lent their sound to Amy Winehouse, Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow, Al Green, Mark Ronson, Michael Buble and many others. But now it is Sharon's time to shine, her stage presence is more energetic tightly tuned than ever, putting her in a class of performers long thought extinct.
The gates open at 6pm and the show is scheduled to start at 7pm. Be nice and throw a few bucks in the bucket to support the free concert series.
I shot these images of the band and members of Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens last April when they were celebrating their album release at the Apollo Theater, a preview of the genuine soul to come this weekend.
