Brunching Outdoors: Home/Made
For brunch this weekend, hop on your bike and head to Home/Made in Red Hook. The cozy little eatery lives up to its name in food and decor. Inside, you'll feel like you're in a friend's living room — the chairs are replaced by plump couches and a friendly cat likes to nuzzle his head on your legs — but the backyard garden is the ideal place to enjoy your morning meal. With long wooden tables, benches topped with pastel colored pillows, potted plants abound, and just-picked-fresh food, dining in the outdoor area feels like a picnic at a country cottage.
Owners Monica Byrne and Leisah Swenson, who formerly operated a home goods store just up the street, put a lot of love and delicate flavors into their menu. They offer a variety of scrambles, all made with locally raised eggs. The truffled egg scramble with Parmigiana Reggiano and the smoked salmon, dill & goat cheese scramble are both particularly noteworthy. All come with provencal potatoes and freshly baked and toasted walnut bread. For a sweeter meal, go for the French toast, a giant, fluffy piece of citrus-dipped brioche bathed in caramel dressing and topped with fresh pears, apples, and dried cherries. An added bonus comes in the dark French roast coffee: for only $3, you get a bottomless carafe.
Don't let Home/Made's far-off location deter you. The food is superb, plus you can stroll along the waterfront when you're done.
