The MTA is moving forward with its plan to raise fares starting next year. Probably the most talked about proposal is capping the unlimited 30-day MetroCard at 90 rides and upping the price to $99; a truly unlimited card would be available for $104. Additionally, the MTA proposes to charge $1 for every new MetroCard purchased, and $0.25 for every single ride ticket printed. Gothamist has the full listing of proposed changes.
As the result of a year-long investigation, the NYPD busted a gang of drug dealers for selling heroin and crack in the Albany Houses in Crown Heights. Last week, investigators taped one dealer bringing his toddler son along with him as he picked up $50 worth of drugs and delivered it to an undercover cop, according to the Daily News.
A group of Harvard graduates based in Brooklyn are creating a cab-sharing iPhone app. App users would enter their location and destination, then it would match them up with other riders heading the same direction. The New York Observer reports that the company has already signed a contract with Eastern Car Service, a Park Slope livery cab company, and they are working on contracts with other services.
Brownstone Brooklyn may get two more historic districts in the near future. The Landmarks Preservation Commission agreed to hold public hearings about proposals for he Wallabout Historic District near the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Park Place Historic District in Crown Heights. The Brooklyn Eagle says the vote to hold the hearings was unanimous.
A Brooklyn College student filed a lawsuit against the NYPD for wrongful arrest after she was busted for carrying her miniature poodle into a Bay Ridge subway station. According to the New York Post, the woman took her dog outside after the cop approached her. But she was arrested for disorderly conduct after trying to take her cell phone back from cop, who grabbed it when she removed it from her purse, which resulted in a night behind bars.
