Performance artist, producer and director Sini Anderson appeared last month at the Franklin Park Reading Series and we were immediately struck by her voice and stories, told over the hum of her back up band. Sini is a talented Brooklynite with a long history in punk, the arts and film, who is currently working on a project that will likely be near and dear to anyone with an inner riot grrrl.  She's directing a documentary about her long time friend Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre fame. In a recent email to friends and colleagues, she introduced the project.

Kathleen has always been famously reclusive in regard to media attention, and all but silent about her own story. As the director of this film, I am in the unique position of also being her close friend, and the person to whom she has decided to finally tell her story. It’s a unique opportunity, and an important one. This film is not simply an archive of Kathleen’s impact on our culture as a feminist leader and musician (which could easily be a five-part miniseries)…In a sentence, I am making an intimate portrait of a complex artist and activist that explores where she’s been, where she is now, and where she is going. Inevitably, these questions will engage larger ones about the nature of art and activism, as well as fame, friendship, and community.

Stay tuned for more greatness from Sini as she completes the project.  In the meantime, you can help make this project a reality by contributing via Paypal to sinianderson3 at gmail dot com.

Almost Famous! What Brooklyn’s Bands Do To Pay The Bills

For local musicians to be prolific in this modern-day cash-is-king society – and specifically in the pricey bohemian mecca of New York City – one has to be realistic, and get one of those things regular people call a “day job” to pay the bills. Often when that 9 am to 5pm or 4pm to 1am shift is done, a double-life is born.
