Happy Heat Wave!

By No Comments thumbnail-8491

Get psyched for another calendar by yours truly, Lauren of Queerespondence! Thanks for coming out last Saturday for Cowboy/Girl/People Perfection! What a treat! So I don’t know about you, but I certainly am not the biggest fan of the heat. I am of Scandinavian descent and prefer the frostier climates to the smoggy and sweltering NYC summer. Growing up in Brooklyn, I made friends with the block’s open fire hydrant during the endless heatwave days. Now, I generally stick with air conditioning, which makes my inner polar bear quite happy. If you are one of the unfortunate saps who exists without such a wondrous appliance, I have a list of activities to keep you cool – temperature – and social acceptability-wise! Happy heat wave!

In its fifth year, the New York Post calls the festival “perfect for short attention spans.” Sign me up! Join them for the first night and on going hosting of over 60 fine acts over the course of three nights, so you’re sure to hear something you like. Here’s a sampling of the goings on, Ivan Sandomire, the ladies of Ten Antenna, Secondstar, Grace Love of This Is Grace, and the tender Kevin Johnston. Come check out this Slope scene!

SOUTH: What a perfect day to head out to Coney Island! Hang at the beach and then check out Jamsterdam, a free all-day concert series benefiting Autism Speaks at the Asser-Levy Amphitheater on Surf Avenue. Definitely check out Circadian Clock  and Theo Eastwind. Then, only steps away, you can catch the fireworks on the boardwalk at 9:30pm before you head to Coney Island’s Burlesque at the Beach! The Schlep Sisters headline as “long lost sisters that found each other while tracing the roots of Yiddish Theater and Vaudeville.” Check out their awesome act amongst other star performers! $15 gets you an eyeful at 1280 Surf Ave from 9 to midnight!

NORTH: Another Soffita! This third edition is bound to be even more nuts. The space transforms into a noir hommage each time but mostly we're interested in what angles the walls will take on this time. Join Ron Like Hell, Ryan of Rocket, and others as they drink, dance, and make out. The energy each time is Berlin/SanFran, but this heat is bound to remind you that you are in fact in the Loft above Public Assembly in our humble borough. Hit it up after midnight and you're sure to make a match or at least light one.

Famous Birthday: Courtney Love
Drink of Choice: Kamikaze Shot

Saturday|7.10

Queers, Beers, and Rears is an alternative monthly, rock and roll party for gay folks and those that love ‘em! They support D.I.Y. bands and performance artists which is a pretty sweet deal. The grim and perfection of the Cake Shop makes this a sure fire bet. Check out the line-up:
CAVES (featuring Luis of Pansy Division & the Avengers) 12AM
HEY WILLPOWER (featuring Will of Imperial Teen) 12:45AM
NAKED HEROES (energetic Brooklyn rock!) 1:30AM
As always DJ Loins, Go-Karff, and A.MARTINI spin punk, wave and dance. Expect tatoos, shorts, and shirtlessness. Duh.

Famous Birthday: Jessica Simpson
Drink of Choice: Lemon Drop
