Atlantic Yards Report recently acquired a document showing that the wall of the new arena will be less than seven feet from the tracks of the wall of the 2/3 train lines north along Flatbush Avenue. The tunnels in danger were described in 2007 as in "critical condition" and required repair "in the immediate future" and the "near future," which Ratner is now obligated to make. There's a corn field growing in Brooklyn. Artist Christina Kelly planted the crop on an oversized sidewalk extension at the corner of Smith and Bergen Streets at the beginning of the summer. Now the stalks have grown into an impressive field, reminiscent of the Native American corn fields that once covered the area. The artist told the Brooklyn Eagle that she hopes to host a harvest party at the end of the summer for people to eat the corn.
The Clinton Hill Co-Op is one step closer to opening now that the founders have rented a storefront at Putnam Avenue and Grand Street. According to the Brooklyn Paper, they are modeling the grocery store after the 37-year-old Park Slope Food Co-Op. One founder said, "We don't want to reinvent the wheel."
Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacobs (D-Flatbush), who’s been legally collecting both a salary and a pension from taxpayers since 2008, says she wants one more term. Jacobs told The Courier News that she plans to leave office in two years when district lines are redrawn, but her challenger Michele Adolphe is skeptical that Jacobs will actually leave the seat she has held for 32 years.
The City is fighting back — against bed bugs. This afternoon, a plan to attack the little pests will be announced at City Hall. City Room quoted the president of Standard Pest Management saying, "If fully implemented, the recommendations could reverse the current increase in bedbug activity and actually improve our situation."
