Either/Or with ImFromDriftwood.com’s Nathan Manske
Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Nathan Manske of I’m From Driftwood.com at South 4th Bar and Café, which was buzzing with early drinkers as we found a table in the back and started chatting. Nathan is a charming mix of straight forward and soft-spoken, and though we’ve only known each other for a short while, his candor makes us feel like old friends.
This boy with a blog founded ImFromDriftwood.com a little over a year ago, when inspired by the work of Harvey Milk, he began simply documenting the stories of gay people all over the globe. Headquartered in his Williamsburg apartment and anywhere with decent WiFi, he records the living history of the gay movement, giving insight to the closeted, comfortably out, and straight people alike.
The audio, written, and video submissions all document the true stories of LGBT people from Auckland to Brooklyn. Nathan along with a small staff – videographer Marquise Lee, Webmaster and Editor Rafi Mittlefehldt, and the striking Jessie Tilton on P.R. – back the rapidly popular site. He spends his afternoons all over our borough collecting video stories with all matters of queer. What started as a passion project may soon qualify for non-profit status assuring this writer that good work does not long go unnoticed.
Nathan was deemed one of the most important up and coming gays to hit the scene in the Advocate's top 40 under 40, so I didn’t want to waste the chance to pick his brain with questions he had already answered. I decided we’d play a game of EITHER/OR and get right to the core. As always this game is sometimes easy and always telling, answer along and rate your compatibility with this raising local media maker (answers in red).
