After scalding two children this week, the giant steel domes at the new Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 1 are set to be removed. The NY Daily News says that the structures caused problems from the beginning. Park officials tried to solve the problem by planting trees putting tents over the domes, but the structures still overheated.

A different playground brought happiness to many South Brooklyn children and residents. A parking lot in Bensonhurst was transformed into a $1 million playground as part of Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative. The Brooklyn Eagle says the play area features an artificial turf field, fitness and play equipment, basketball and volleyball courts, trees, benches and more.

Assemblywoman Joan Millman wants to cut back on everyone's favorite summer activity — outdoor drinking. She put forth a bill that would close all rooftop and backyard bars or outdoor seating an hour before midnight on weekends and at 10 pm on weeknights. The Brooklyn Paper reports that community boards across Brooklyn are so anti-outdoor drinking that even Borough President Marty Markowitz urged them to be more liberal.

But Markowitz has issues of his own to take care of. Yesterday, local synagogues sued the Borough President over his longtime Coney Island concert series. The NY Post says that for decades, no one complained about the concerts, but now they are furious over the plan to expand the shows with a new 8,000-seat amphitheater.

Extending the bike lane along Vanderbilt Avenue was discussed this week by Community Board 2. According to The Local, the debate came down to a familiar one — bike lanes or parking spots? At one spot in the route, extending the bike lane would remove five overnight parking spots.
