There's a bow and arrow wielding bandit loose in Prospect Park. Yesterday afternoon, a Canadian goose was found near the lake running around with an arrow or dart through its neck. A parks spokesperson told City Room, "Our Urban Park Rangers report that they have been making attempts to catch the goose. It can fly and it keeps flying away from them."
A group of community members and preservationists won the months-long battle to save an historic church in Brownsville. The church was to be torn down to make way for 102 affordable apartments. Brownstoner reports that under a compromise the plan, the church will be saved and converted into a community center and only 50 apartments will be built.
Coney Island just can't seem to catch a break. After Memorial Day, the city removed trash cans from a particularly packed section of the boardwalk in an attempt to ease congestion. But the lack of trash bins has created a huge mess, and residents are outraged. One businessperson told the NY Daily News, "It looks almost like a tornado hit the Boardwalk. It's really gross."
At a panel last night, three much hated Brooklyn developers commiserated about no one liking them. The whiners included Joe Sitt of Thor Equities, who owns much of Coney Island. The Real Deal reports that he said he felt "blindsided" by the backlash against his projects. One the other hand… "A lot of the controversy… to some degree, for the sake of the project, I actually enjoy it," Sitt said.
In other real estate news, almost half of the condos in the Pencil Factory development in Greenpoint have sold. According to the Brooklyn Eagle, the sales team for the condominiums expects all the units to be sold by the fall.
