Brooklyn is full of singles getting their apartment ready for spring! One of those bachelors is 24 year-old dancer Stuart Singer. He’s a tree of a man with a taste for simple and homey things. His mix of retro, heirlooms, and craigslist finds makes for a great space. Spy on this handsome drink of water and welcome the coming days of spring! Hooray!

Stuart Singer, 24

Queerespondence: How long have you been in Brooklyn?

Stuart: I’ve been in Brooklyn since 2005.  I lived right around the corner from this apartment when I first moved here, then did a lot of moving around – spent a year living in next to a fish market Chinatown.  Smelly.  But now, five years and five apartments later, I’m right back where I started.

Q: BAM must have been so neat! Tell me about it.

Stuart: Well, that BAM bag in the photo is actually from when I first moved here and needed some extra cash – I hung up posters around Brooklyn for thirty bucks and they gave me the bag.  I did get to perform at the Harvey last year as part of the Next Wave Festival.  It is such a beautiful theatre – my favorite in the city, maybe in the world.  A huge honor.

Q: How did you find the apartment?

Stuart: My roommate and I decided to start looking for a new place in December.  She went home for the holidays and I saw this place the day after she left.  It was a mad dash to get it, and I did all of the work to get it while she was away.  She trusted me enough to send me the money and sign the lease without even seeing it.  Kind of a crazy moment, but it’s working out so far.

Q: Where did you get the desk?

Stuart: Ugh, the desk!  I spent a couple of months searching for the right desk.  I knew I finally had enough space in my room for a big work surface, so scoured all of the likely places – furniture stores, flea markets, you know.  Nothing was quite right.  And then I was down at the Brooklyn Flea – I knew that all of the furniture there can be a little pricy, but thought I’d give it one more shot, and still, nothing was exactly what I was looking.  So I was browsing around and came across this old door that a vendor was using as a table top – I asked if it was for sale, and he said no.  And then I asked again, and he said yes.  And now it’s my desk.

Q: Whats the story with the little guy in the fireplace?

Stuart: I picked that up when I was living in Chinatown.  Never really had any use for it, but I think it’s pretty.  And  I just realized during the photo shoot that it says Perfection on it.

Q: Tell about the white piano.

Stuart: I played the piano when I was a kid, and then gave it up when I started dancing.  I was browsing on craigslist for some furniture a couple of days before our move back in December and I literally came across this posting a couple of minutes after it went up.  A girl was giving the piano away because she was in a situation where she had to move immediately.  I called her, and had it moved to our place.  And now I’m brushing up on my childhood Bach.

A Love-In, To Spite The Hate

soc_gayrights_0607-300x225-1

A month of public and private uproar and controversy over so many issues its hard to even pick one. Bullied gay youth doing the unspeakable; a dysfunctional homophobe running to be the executive of our state; a series of attacks both physical and metaphorical, its all very surreal in 2010. On the heels of Monday’s coming out day, remember that you stand on the shoulders of many brave queer giants. We aren’t done changing minds and hearts. Something is a brewing and we’ve got to create positive peaceful change where we can. It does get better, but as it turns out, we aren’t done yet.
