Diane Russo/Farmani Gallery

DUMBO (1st Thursdays Gallery Walk this week!)

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 1, 6-8:30pm

Select Gender revolves around the themes of gender-based identity, self-awareness and gender-specific culture. Whether they are discussing their own identity or that of others, this diverse group of emerging photographers shows us different aspects and interpretations of perceived gender roles. The juxtapositions of gender queer, hyper masculinities, and ambiguous representations force the viewer to question his or her own perceptions and the legitimacy of a gender binary.

Co-curated by budding artists Rafael Soldi, Paolo Morales, and Elle Perez, the show is comprised of photographic works by: Daniel Aguirre, Carl Bower, Caleb Cole, Nicolas Djandji, Jason Hanasik, Jamil Hellu, Monique Bergen Henegouwen, Kate Hutchinson, Katie Koti, Diane Russo, J. Aiden Simon, Sarah Sudhoff, and Molly Landreth and Amelia Tovey.

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 1, 5-9pm

This exhibition considers the significance of the word “resonance,” its diverse meanings across disparate fields and within different contexts, and then focuses on its implications to the visual arts and painting.

Featuring work by Firelei Baez, Brendan Carroll, Xuan Chen, Andrew Graham, Linling Lu, Julie Oppermann, Devin Powers, Camilo Sanin, Elisa Soliven, and Marela Zacarias, the show was curated by Julie Oppermann, whose large-scale Moiré paintings, featured in the show, provided the inspiration for the theme.

The exhibition proposes that the term “resonance” connotes discrete energies, vibrations, ideas, or concepts, which are made stronger via their interaction and overlap with one another. Through this agenda, each work in the show represents a permutation and interpretation of a common theme. Centering in on the concept of resonance, and the medium of painting, each artist explores what this means in terms of their own work. Thus, when the works are all brought together for the exhibition, the ideas, questions, thoughts and concepts generate a dialogue that reverberates back and forth between the paintings, growing stronger and louder and finding meaning through the interaction.

WILLIAMSBURG / BUSHWICK

Opening Reception: Friday, April 2, 7-10pm

The sensation of light is a consistent thread throughout the work of Filipa Castro; it is a third presence (in addition to the photographer and subject) whose mark is felt on various, often empty, spaces, and anonymous figures. Additionally, her images filter the world through a subdued and painterly palette. This combination of the activity of light and subtlety of color project a vision of her surroundings, which is at once solitary and beautiful.

The work of Guillaume Gilbert portrays the urban areas of both New York City and Paris. His dogged use of 35mm black and white film provides a fitting medium for his depiction of social alienation as evidenced in his subjects: archetypes of youth and maturity, commuters and night figures. His work depicts a claustrophobic and harsh space traversed by assorted characters who are often connected only by a glance. Yet ultimately a connection can be made; alienation, like the commute itself, is a transient state.

PARK SLOPE

One of many Shitty Kitties.

Shitty Kitty Meet Up, Thursday, April 1, 7pm-late
Commonwealth Bar, 5th Avenue and 12th Street

Shitty Kitty, aka the comic illustrator geniuses behind Telephone and Soup, recently moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn, where they’ve brought along their “Shitty Kitty Meet Ups.” The evenings consist of good people drinking and getting shitty on good beer while making all kinds of drawings of cats with their own captions.
So go have a beer and make drawings of your own Shitty Kitty. Maybe yours will be a karate champ, or a news anchor, or a plumber. The possibilities are endless- and highly entertaining. It’s an uplifting evening that encourages a collective love of alcohol, cats, humor, and scribbling. What more could you want?

PROSPECT HEIGHTS/CROWN HEIGHTS
