White House Project to Brooklyn Women: Go Lead
Dr. Karen Gould, the brand new and first female president of Brooklyn College, joined Borough President Marty Markowitz at Borough Hall yesterday to kick off a new partnership with the White House Project that will culminate in a day long conference called Go Lead next January. The program aims to inspire and engage woman across Kings County to run for political office.
Go Lead is facilited by the White House Project, whose mission aims to fill "the leadership pipeline with a richly diverse, critical mass of women, [in order to] make American institutions, businesses and government truly representative." The organization was founded by Marie WIlson (pictured), who previously ran the Ms. Foundation for Woman for nearly two decades, and is in its 11th year.
“We need a massive effort to recruit, train, and support women running for office,” said Ms. Wilson in a statement. “Go Lead empowers women to be at the forefront of politics by providing innovative skills, strategies, and networks for leadership.”
Go Lead will be a day long event on January 8, 2010, that hopes to empower the ambitious women of Brooklyn College to engage the political process through voter registration, issue briefing, network building and understanding the process of running for elected office. The White House Project has trained over 8,000 women nationwide through their award-winning Vote, Run, Lead program since 2004.
