Wednesday
The Laid Party has been sweetly donned ‘the everybody gets laid party.’ I once met a boyfriend here that lasted eight months, so, it’s not all hype. Hip-hop girls, lanky gays, and the gender queer folk all roll up for this anything goes smash hit. It was conceived at Southpaw in Park Slope and has visited the Knitting Factory. Expect to see the talented females of UBIQITA are a mix of hip-hop and art collective; Weird Genius, the newest reincarnation brought to you by this perfect collision of minds and DJ Roze Ryze & NOA D spin the eco-friendly Gowanus hotspot. Be there. Dance.
Celebrity Toast: Mean Girl Lacey Chabert turns 27 today. She will attend a party of 5.
Drink of Choice: Shirley Temple
Thursday
The backyard of Brooklynite Gallery is a little like a scene out of 8 ½. The glowing white facade of its back wall is broken up by zigzag windows that open onto a well-kept lawn with glowing cubes, and bright blue chairs contrasting the clean edges of the surrounding raw wood fence. Located on Malcolm X Boulevard, its in-house personalities are made up predominantly of street artists. The collected works remind me of what an angsty teenager with a flare for acid and comics might create if they were raised by cut and paste queen Barbara Kruger and the infamous Keith Herring. The kaleidoscope of Brooklyn culture is a great date idea and might get you to first base. This Thursday marks the dead middle of Copasetic, an exhibition by Brooklyn born Dain, which is free and runs til’ October 12.
Celebrity Toast: Stella Stevens (pictured) was a pioneer playmate with bangin’ hair. Mad props to the nude lady who turns 70 today!
Drink of Choice: Hef’s Special Martini
Friday
New York’s Pyramid Club is sometimes gay and always a goodtime. The East Village institution is the kind of gay bar bachlorettes have their drunken gatherings and straight guys don’t mind having a few beers. The long running retro-80s night offers different themes each week, but this one is spectacular. We are traveling back to 1984! Olivia Newton-John’s 84 to be exact, screenings of rare appearances by Sandy in SNL, Solid Gold, Dick Cavett and many other throw back gems. The DeLorean DMC-12 takes off at 10 and offers cheap drinks before midnight. You get the 80s for $8, which is only acceptable because it’s cute.
Celebrity Toast: Sting is dead sexy at 57 and ever since that tantric sex thing came out it’s been hard to listen to The Police. It’s been really hard.
Drink of Choice: Peace and Serenity
Saturday
In the borough: Previously Asterisk, Lake Johnson is a performance, art, and commune 2 blocks away from the Montrose Ave stop on the L Train. Their self proclaimed Best Party of All Time Ever sounds like a tall order, but we’ll see. It’s a traditional dance, drink, dance-more-party. The steep staircase leads you to the cozy, 60-person capacity, and loft space. This leads to lots of inappropriate touching, which is why we go out on a Saturday. Right? DJ Dirty Finger, Radical Outing, and DJ Hospitality all spin. Expect the equally strange and violent La Haine to project above the bumping dance floor; the French study of police brutality is an odd choice. Must be the weather.
In the City: Southern-born Brooklyn badass Toshi Reagon is an event all on her lonesome. Her wife and little girl reside in Brooklyn and opportunities to see her perform are rare. The college drop out turned activist has played with Ani Difranco, Elvis Costello and many others. Her bluegrass folky take on old classics and original works will be on the main stage, along side her band Big Lovely at Joe’s Pub. The bar alongside New York’s Public Theater is a jazz institution and has been a place for queer talent since its conception. The show starts at 9 for $22 a ticket.
Celebrity Toast: Tommy Lee is slimy, dumb, and… really sexy! Am I the only one? Pamela, You get it right?
Drink of Choice: Anything at all
