Just Legends
All of these birthdays are simply legendary. After sorting through a bunch of mediocre celebs and old school heroes these folks should be toasted with some fine spirits. Brag your B-day knowledge with these late night legends all over our gay borough.
Tuesday
Tuesday is easy—easy walking distance, that is. There are two really cute spots to hit.
DROP IT: The surreally comforting and all at once filthy Glasslands on an industrial strip of Williamsburg has played host to Secret Faggot and loads of gay nights since its conception. AZZ EV3RYWH3RE is a peppering of local and imported talent. New Orleans natives, Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia lay down verse and generally alarm, while Rusty Lazer spins alongside Brooklyn’s DJ Dirty Finger (pictured). And Baltimore’s master of hip-hop and booty bass, Spank Rock, will encourage you to shake that nasty shit like Backyard Betty for only $8. The line-up looks a lot like a preview of the Santos Party House this coming Saturday, with the exception of O.M.G Michelle and a few others. The backside bash is hosted by Ojay Morgan and arrives at 10pm.
SING IT: Head over to Metropolitan in WIlliamsburg for Queerakoe which usually begins with a clique of twinks singing Madonna and ends with a trio of otters trying to take themselves seriously as they belt 99 Luftballons. This lip-synching mess at Metropolitan happens every Wednesday. Your host Grady will keep the tunes moving. Roll up at this fabulously awkward affair for $3 drink specials with heavy pour bartenders Garry and Pietro.
Celebrity Toast: Mezzo-soprano Joan Jett is still in love with rock n’ roll at 48. Her punk pop feminist edge makes all the gays jump up.
Drink of Choice: Whiskey neat
Wednesday
Sugarland’s hump day offering is a piping hot serving of Sweet Beats. T-Boy will spin the usual dance hits. Jimmy and Jarrod will command the bar serving $3 bevies of all sorts, all night long. Nearly nude Brian Maci will saunter through the crowd with $1 shots in tow. Sugarland is always a mess. The dance floor will smell like boy and booze while the outside patio will reek of camels and attitude. Go for the music and stay for the hangover!
Celebrity Toast: John Coltrane worked along side greats like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk to create modern jazz. Perfection.
Drink of Choice: Downers
Thursday
Thursday is just nasty. East Village Boys and Denim Shorts design your evening of sin in the city.
SHORT SHORTS: The brick façade of Phoenix (Avenue A and East 13th) in Manhattan is a scene all its own. Boys from the Boiler Room head over around midnight and it’s an instant flirt fest. From young professionals to baristas, everybody wants to bum a smoke. The Denim Shorts dance party at Phoenix will soon be the Long Slacks night, so before it gets too cold, pull on some warmish tiny shorts and get down to indie, punk, and rock jams. The pool table is always surrounded by cute wannabes and with $3 drafts all night, getting someone’s tiny shorts off is no tall order.
NO SHORTS: Nearby at the Hose (Avenue A between 13th and 14th Streets), East Village Boys – which features some of the strangest looking hotties downtown has to offer – will launch their fall party in the East Village. Miss Sylvia London will be your host for the evening, presenting performances by The Lovely Jonjo and shirtless spinning by DJ Sean B and DJ RAY. All the go-go boys are (un)dressed by S2VS. Slava Mogutin will take some shots akin to the nearly naughty hot pics that E.V.B is known for. So trim up and show up.
Celebrity Toast: Ernest Hemingway would probably like to give his boyfriend a birthday shout out. Happy Birthday F. Scott Fitzgerald! Y’all sure were a power couple!
Drink of Choice: A fine port
Friday
Bar4 boasts live girls and folk indie stylings by the regulars starting at 9. Bring your singles, because Duck and Cozy will present a night of live local music and even more lively burlesque. Bar4′s venture in burlesque, considering the extinction of the famed Barrette, is one of the only descent girly shows in BK. Performances by the screaming chicks of Ten Antenna and the flirty boys of Dinosaur Feathers, with dancing by Cozy Josie, Darling Daphnie and Della Dare. An evening of music and moxy makes it hard to leave the Park Slope corner without a big grin.
Celebrity Toast: We sure hope Barbara Walters is enjoying the view on this her 77th day on God’s green earth. Old as dirt, she still looks fine!
Drink of Choice: Champagne
Saturday
The boys and girls of Discovery, an evening of disco revival, have designed an evening for everyone. DJ’s VDRK and Free Magic are bringing the come one, come all vibe downstairs at the Santos Party House this Saturday. The big shots of DFA are sending over some real hard-hitting hipsters including HOLY GHOST. Love Brigade and Famous Friends snap shots and network while you blackout. Go forth, Saturday night awaits!
Celebrity Toast: John “Appleseed” Chapman was a true pioneer he spread apples all over Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Happy Birthday Johnny!
Drink of Choice: Apple Juice, obviously
Sunday
Back to Sugarland for Sunday, only this time to remember. The filthy watering hole will play host to an art show meets dance party, giving queer talent a place to feature their work. You cannot only view, but bid on the pieces. Featured works by Marcos Chin, Nathan Frohnhoefer, Becky Borowicz and many other inspired folks will be part of the exhibit. Bands and DJs accompany the free show. With two for one cocktails the chance you’ll bid is grossly increased with each trip to the bar. So bring your eye for good taste and your wallet.
Celebrity Toast: Jayne Meadows was a star of the silver screen. And unlike Norma Desmond she aged gracefully. A real class act the fabulous starlet is 88 today.
Drink of Choice: Campari and Soda
