Boys Only Birthday
There are some zexy men to toast this tres gay weekend. It’s a boys only birthday toast each day this week! Ditch class, grab a flask, and hit some great nights on the town! Here is a fresh out of the oven hand picked gay-genda. Cheers!
Wednesday
The Humpday Dance Party at Bar4 is a jump up and down, jump all around good time. Miss Felgar manhandles the decks. Expect electro, throwback hits and an alarming amount of Tina and Whitney. A great way to break up the week, this evening of locals is the perfect wind down. The gay/straight ratio is always quite refreshing at the Park Slope haunt. I strongly recommend the chorizo-grilled cheese, plus they let you pick what chips you want! Doritos! Do it!
Celebrity Birthday: Hugh Grant is still the movies! The British horn dog turns 48 today. Cheerio!
Drink of Choice: A Divine Brown with a twist of Lemon
Thursday
Recently, over a stiff Manhattan with friends tucked away in the ivy covered back garden of Sycamore I eyed local cuties and flirted with John the bartender. I have only had a good time at the Ditmas Park bar. A flower shop by day and a lively hot spot in the evenings, this watering hole is one of a kind. The cozy down stairs music venue is a perfect place for a long lip lock or exchange of digits. The selection of whiskey and the bouquet/pint special is functional and adorable. Their Q-Train Queer nights have been hit and miss. My suggestion this week is to revive it with a guerilla take over. I’ll be there with at least five gays in tow. You do the same! Herald in the fall with layers, cardigans, and of course gays! I’ll see you there!
Celebrity Birthday: We can all think of some cruel intentions involving today’s birthday boy, Ryan Phillippe. The hot dad still looks 22.
Drink of Choice: Draft Beer, like a true stud
Friday
The East Side lair The Hose hosts Frisky Disco every Friday and DJ Corey Tut certainly knows how to bring all the boys to the yard. Someone always ends up on the bar, complete with a stripper pole. Boys come to network, makeout and judge. DJ Aaron Elvis spins the late set, totally free with some of the hottest gay-acting bartenders. The Hose also hosts the monthly Rocket Party and Ron Like Hell parties and is sure to be a good time. This Avenue B spot has surprisingly nice door guys, so strike up a convo and snag a free drink!
Celebrity Birthday: The Sinatra inspired swinger Harry Connick, Jr. pulls our heartstrings with his somber notes and sexy mug.
Toast of Choice: Martini Dry, like any member of the Rat Pack
Saturday
More birthday news! The New York Film Critics’ Circle celebrates its 75th birthday this year and in honor will be screening a series called Critical Favorites. Among them is one of my personal favorites, All About Eve. The stand out performance in All About Eve is of course Bette Davis, but a young Anne Baxter contends for the slot. The tail of obsession and fame is one chock full of Bette’s classic deadpan bug-eyed genius. Blink and you might miss a very young and alarmingly thin Marilyn Monroe practicing what would later become her pouty signature baby-talk act. Grab a buddy and hit the afternoon show.
Celebrity Birthday: Breakout Star for the Houston Rockets Yao Ming turns 29. At 7 foot 6 inches he is a tree I’d sure like to climb.
Drink of Choice: A can of whoop ass.
Sunday
Satellite Reunion is an overwhelming 3-story madhouse of funk with more than 50 DJs spinning all over, this free event at Bar 13 near Union Square is bound to smell like people, self-promotion, and apparently rooftop BBQ. Just the idea of that much free music in one space is unnerving. Tom Mello presents this action-packed class reunion of talents like David Hollands of New York’s Fuerza Bruta, Rocket’s Ron Like Hell, and the Bay Area’s Reunion originator Justin Johnson. Expect madness and perfection.
Celebrity Birthday: It’s the classic story of boy meets birthday: Ben Savage celebrates his 29th year. We will always have a soft spot for Topanga.
Drink of Choice: Bad Boy Shawn convinced him to flask it to the prom and Mister Feeny caught them both. No surprise there.
Monday
Free alert! A one time only reading of Under a Full Pink Moon: Chronicles of a Gay Werewolf, will be read by members of the Atlantic Theater Company at 7pm at 330 West 16th Street. The story is a new play about how rough it is to be southern and gay in New York, and the age old story about lifestyle, mortality and hill-billys hit really close to home for this writer. The reading includes Ryan O’Nan, Sebastian Stan and the boisterous Dan Butler. An exciting oppurtunity to see interesting theatre in process at no ticket price is rare in this town.
Celebrity Birthday: President Dmitry Medvedev turns 44 today. The doughy prez is easily pictured in a leather daddy scenario with Vladimir Putin. Just me?
Drink of Choice: Ice-cold potato vodka
Tuesday
OutAboutBrooklyn.com has almost single handedly curated the gay scene in Brooklyn since its conception. Casey, its smart handler, consistently keeps borough gays informed of the new hot spots, the old favorites and everything happening on the scene. The site invites everyone to the scotch happy Legion Bar in Williamsburg to enjoy a screening of Malcolm Ingram’s award-winning documentary Small Town Gay Bar. A bittersweet look at gay bars pioneering in the south, the film takes an astute look at homophobia. Along side sponsors like Babeland and Word bookstore the blog hopes to support the surprisingly new Brooklyn Community Pride Center. The group is working hard to establish the first LGBT Center in Brooklyn and representatives will be there to chat about the venture. The movie gets started shortly after 8pm and the evening includes the talented crew of go-go boys, drag queens, and eccentrics of my very own Gender Bender family. The floorshow includes Estelle, Thorgy and some surprise performances. Miss Cakes spins electro, pop, and current hits. With a movie screening, a floorshow, and chance to win prizes like dinner for two at Brooklyn’s own Cafecito Bogotá, the $10 cover with a good cause is a steal.
Celebrity Birthday: The Charming Prince Harry can save me any day. I’m into it.
Drink of Choice: Crown Royal Chilled
